At Mahurangi College we run five boys teams and one girl’s team. The majority of our rugby is played in term two with teams competing in the North Harbour Competition. Our Boys 1st XV play in the A division and this year finished in 7th position. The Girl's 1st XV are North Harbour champions for 2009.
The Boys 1st XV also play for the Murray Jones Shield, which is competed for every year between lower Northland Schools.
Many quality players have emerged from Mahurangi College and have gone on to have successful rugby careers. Three All Blacks began their playing days at the College – Murray Jones who played 5 test matches for the All Blacks at prop in the early 70’s, Robin Brooke who played 62 test matches at lock between 1992 and 1999 and Zinzan Brooke who played 58 test matches as a loose forward between 1987 and 1997. The Brooke brothers can only be described as legends of the game and we are proud to have them as past students.
The College has an exchange programme set up with Selbourne School in South Africa. We currently have two Selbourne students playing for the 1st XV whilst two of last year’s 1st XV are over in the Republic enjoying a gap year.
