Senior Drama Production - Romeo and Juliet
Two households both alike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene... well sort of. In a 21stcentury classroom some kids are introduced to a well known play about two "star crossed lovers" and their terrible fate. As the students try to figure the play out they themselves become the “players” and realise that this Shakespeare guy might actually know a thing or two about young love.
This was the premise behind the recent senior drama production of Romeo and Juliet. “We took a well known play but tried to give our own twist to it”, says Jonathan Dutton, drama teacher and director of the show. Students were challenged to tell the story using only objects and clothing they could find in a modern classroom. White board pens became rapiers, scripts turned into serving trays and V cans replaced vials of poison. Mr Dutton also added a chorus of modern day school students to the play. These students helped give context to the play and appeared throughout the story to add clarity to particular scenes.
The play was enjoyed over two nights by friends, family and staff, with one parent commenting, “It was really impressive… they did so well”. For some students this was their last high school drama performance. “I’m really proud of what the students achieved and hope a lot of them will continue acting in some form after they have left school” says Mr Dutton.
