Head Girl, Lauren Vaughan's Anzac Service Speech.

We attended the Anzac dawn and morning service yesterday and standing there watching the proceedings made me really think about the significance of Anzac day. As we were all standing there having different views of Anzac day, one thing that we all have in common is that we remember those who risked their lives while fighting for our country with many not returning to us.

I have attended many Anzac services with my family since I was little.  Anzac day allows me to remember how my Granddad served in the royal navy, fighting for his country and having my dad serve in active military service in Africa and who is standing here in the parade today. Listening to the stories and looking at old photos of my family serving in the war makes it all the more real to me.

Anzac day makes me appreciate the freedom and independents  that we have in our country.
We are privileged to have amongst us these men/women in uniform as a vivd reminder of how many lives were and are still are affected by the destruction of war. It is with deep gratitude that we reflect on there personal sacrifice that made it possible for us to stand here today.

Im now going to read a poem by a Turkish Author.
In 1934, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who led the fighting Turks at Gallipoli and became founder of the Turkish Republic in 1923, paid tribute to the Anzacs with this poem entitled. “Those heroes that shed their blood”.

Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives...
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore, rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side,
Here in this country of ours.
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries...
Wipe away your tears.
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
And are in peace.
After having lost their lives on this land, they have
Become our sons as well.

Thank you.
