image

On Wednesday 7 Dec 2011, Year 10 students and their families gathered to celebrate the culmination of their past two years hard work at the annual Middle School Graduation Prizegving. All of the students present had successfully completed their MSG programme, so they were each awarded their MSG certificate. Some had done extremely well gaining their MSG with Merit (over 70% GPA), Excellence (over 80%) or Distinction (over 90%).

There are also a number of special awards presented, culminating in the National Bank Top Scholar Award which was awarded to Briella Martin. The Peter Greenwood Memorial Award went to Rebekah Wilson and the Sarah Rogers Memorial Award went to Atanrerei Rui.

Interspersed through the evening were Musical Items: Minuet in G Beethoven - Performed by Moana Winiana (Piano), Paradise (Coldplay) - performed by Alana Hathaway, Lana McCarthy and Olivia Collier, The Apache (The Shadows) performed by Stanley Coote, and the Choir performed 2 items finishing with Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Martin and Blane). It has a great night followed by a supper.

David Macleod Principal's speech At the 2011 Middle School Graduation

Board of Trustees members, staff, parents, family members and special guests, it is my pleasure to welcome you all here tonight to the 5th Y10 Graduation ceremony as we recognize and celebrate the academic achievements of our Y10 students.

Nau mai haere mai, haere mai ki runga o tenei kura, tena…

We introduced the MSG programme at the start of 2006 to increase the academic challenge in years 9 and 10 and to add focus to these years, and we have noticed a marked improvement since its introduction.  The MSG can be achieved at various levels and includes self-management skills, which will be extremely important as the students progress into the senior school.

As well as some strong academic achievements this year, you will be aware from our school newsletters, from our website and from the school magazine, our students have also continued to excel in a wide range of cultural, musical and sporting activities.   Many were involved in the kapahaka or Pasifika groups, the school band or choir, or in our wonderful school production of “For Today”.  Many were also involved the Stage Challenge performance of “Home is Where the Heart is” which came 2nd in the Auckland competition and 3rd= in the national stage challenge competition this year.

A large number of our Y10 students were involved in a wide range of sporting activities, including the junior girls’ touch team which just last week came 2nd in the NH competition and then won the Northern regions competition.

I have been very pleased too with some other aspects of our students this year – the outpouring of support for Christchurch and for Japan after the earthquakes earlier this year; the 40 Hr famine; all the charities supported through our mufti days as determined by our student exec; but also little things that showed a compassionate and caring side to our students, and I’m thinking of a letter I received earlier this year from the daughter of an elderly lady who lives here in Warkworth – she had fallen over in her garage and couldn’t get up – some of our students walking home from school her calls and 7 students, several of them in Y10, went in and helped the old lady to her feet, then up her stairs, and they brought her groceries in for her as well and looked after her.

It has been a good year for our school, and I am very proud of our students, but tonight we are here primarily to focus on and celebrate their academic successes this year.  Over the past two years all of these students here tonight have successfully completed their MSG programme, so tonight they will each be awarded their MSG certificate.  Some have done extremely well gaining their MSG with Merit (over 70% GPA), Excellence (over 80%) or Distinction (over 90%).  There are also a number of special awards to be presented tonight, culminating in the National Bank Top Scholar Award.

* To all of you students who are graduating from the middle school tonight – well done and congratulations – you have worked hard and you deserve the success you have achieved.

* Thank you also to all parents for your support and encouragement throughout the year.

* And thank you staff for the tremendous effort you have put in again this year in teaching our students.

So, it is my pleasure to welcome you all here tonight and to congratulate all the students who have graduated and won awards.  I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all well for an enjoyable and safe holiday over the Christmas period.
