Mahurangi College inaugural attendance at the 2016 AIMS Games was a success. AIMS games (Associate of Intermediate and Middle School) is an international tournament for Y7 & Y8 students from schools across New Zealand and the Pacific Islands to participate in a week long tournament in over 21 different team and individual sports. This year saw 9,300 athletes converge to Mount Maunganui to compete and was the first time that Mahurangi College were involved. We took three teams; Boys Hockey, Boys Football and Girls Netball.
Girls Netball had a record 110 schools entered into the 2016 AIMS Games. Our team faced tough competition during the grading rounds against some very fine skilled young netballers, and were eventually re-seeded into D Grade. Here the girls topped their pool with 3 convincing wins advancing to a closely contested semi-final, narrowly loosing by a mere 2 goals. The girls picked themselves up after a devastating loss to come out firing in the 3rd & 4th playoff, beating their opponents by nearly 20 goals and claiming a firm stake on 3rd in D Grade with an overall rank of 99th place.
Boys Hockey had 17 schools enter the 11-a-side competition for the 2016 AIMS Games. Our boys were polished through pool play, loosing only one game and qualifying for a top 8 placing. A tough quarter-final saw the boys go down in an exciting game to the eventual tournament winners, dropping them out of medal contention, but came back in their next game with a smashing 5-0 win guaranteeing them a final placing of 5th or 6th. In their final game the boys played with heart and determination, locking the score to a 2-2 draw at full time….with a defensive penalty corner to still play out. Four defensive penalty corners later, the opposition finally converted, the final score being 3-2, and the boys finishing with an overall rank of 6th place.
Boys Football had 59 schools enter the 9-a-side competition for the 2016 AIMS Games. Our boys showed their football class throughout pool play, winning 5 and drawing 1 which saw them advance through to the Championship knockout rounds as top of their pool, qualifying for a top 16 placing. A tough physical battle against local school Mt Maunganui saw the boys go down 2-0, dropping them out of the top 8. The boys then held their quarter-final match to a 1-1 draw, narrowly, but unfortunately, losing only on penalty shoot outs. A tightly contested win in their semi final match saw the boys now playing for a final placing of 13th or 14th. The scores held to a 0-0 deadlock at full time saw them once again in a nail biting penalty shoot out situation, eventually triumphing with a 5-4 win and an overall rank of 13th place.
Congratulations must also go to Jordon Thomas who was named in the 2016 AIMS Games Hockey Tournament team, and scoring an incredible 23 of the 25 goals for his team throughout the week! A very impressive achievement. Overall Mahurangi College came away with some very credible results for our inaugural AIMS Games, lots of smiling faces and an exciting bug to do it all again next year!
