Te Ara Poutama- 3 Years on and going strong

Our Maori study centre called Te Ara Poutama runs every Thursday during term time from 3.30pm to 5.00pm and is open to all students from year 7 to year 13. It runs in the library where students have access to books, computers and personal help from teachers who give up their time to help tutor students with their homework and some assessments. A modest afternoon tea is also provided.
This initiative was established by Te Whanau o Mahaurangi to facilitate our Maori students to achieve excellence. It has grown since then and has become an initiative open to all students, Maori and non-Maori, It is an initiative founded upon the Maori principles of whanaungatanga (kinship); kotahitanga (working collectively) and tuakana teina (where older students and peers are encouraged to look after and help others, particularly the younger students). Following these values nurtures all students to be the best they can be and achieve all-round excellence.
The goal for 2013 is to make parents and extended whanau feel comfortable to just drop in a for a chat and a cup of tea. They can also, at this time, check their child’s results on line.
