Gateway Report 2014

The 2014 Gateway class started with a class of 19 students. Another student joined the class during Term 1. Four students left during the year, 3 of whom took up employment in the area their Gateway placement was in. The class began working on Core Generic unit standards and completing a CV in readiness for interviews with prospective employers. The students completed a 1-day Hazard Identification course and Job Safety Analysis, which was run by a Private Training Provider, Safety’nAction, with 8 credits at Level 2 and 3. Later in the year the class did a Manual Handling and Hearing Conservation course at the college, also through Safety’nAction. This involved 7 credits in two unit standards at Level 3, which most students completed. Students also completed a First Aid Certificate, consisting of two unit standards at Level 2, run by a private training provider, Medic First Aid.

Safety'Action is a valuable resource as a Provider, as they offer coures for specific purposes such as Height Safety and Working in Confined Spaces. These specific credits are invaluable to stdents when entering the workforce in the relevant areas.

Students undertook to spend one day per week in the workforce in the career of their choice. The majority started their placement by mid March. The industries involved were early childhood, shearing, retail, hospitality, electrical, automotive (panelbeating and auto electrical), nursing, equine, building, hairdressing, and travel and tourism. Placements involved the students undertaking to achieve at least 10 credits from their work placement with the relevant ITO's. Most students gained positive outcomes, thus ensuring that Mahurangi College will be given funding to run the programme in the future.

All the students who completed the year completed their First Aid and Occupational Health and Safety units, as well as achieving credits from their work placements.

A positive outcome was to see how the students gained confidence in their communication skills, and most gained very positive feedback from the employers.

Further Training 8  (including 5 Apprenticeships and 1 pending)

Employment  9

Overseas/other  2

Return to school 1

Twelve of these students gained employment or went to tertiary study in the area of their Gateway placement.

Gateway students continued to source their own placement, with some assisted by the College. This has a positive effect in that students take more ownership of their placements. We plan to continue this procedure in the future, and look forward to another successful Gateway year next year.
