Gateway Programme

The Gateway programme at Mahurangi College is designed for Year 12 and 13 students to undertake workplace learning with their education. Students work on unit standards, minimum 10 credits, aligned with the Industry Training Organisation, at the same time as completing up to 10 credits from the Core Generic unit standards.
Structured workplace learning has the following features:

  • It involves learning in the workplace and school-based learning, which are integrated with each other.
  • Learning is designed, planned and motivated.
  • The learning outcomes to be achieved are clearly articulated and documented for reference by all the parties involved.
  • The learning is assessed.

Structured workplace learning differs from work experience in that work experience is more of a work familiarisation exercise than a skills-building one. The duration and depth of structured workplace learning is more extensive than work experience, which is more of a “taster” approach. Work experience commonly has no formal relationship with the school curriculum. The learning from work experience is generally not assessed, either in the workplace or at school.

Workplace learning enables students to:

  • Test future career and employment options.
  • Increase self-confidence and enhance communication skills through learning in an adult environment.
  • Learn things in the workplace that are useful for school studies.
  • Better understand the relevance of school-based learning.
  • Increase motivation and interest in learning.

Students at Mahurangi College may choose Gateway as an option and will be interviewed with parents and employers and an individual programme agreed on. The programme is run with a Gateway Broker, Teacher, Co-ordinator and administrator. Students will source their own work placement and a programme of work for each individual placement will be provided by the Gateway team. The funding also assists with purchase of equipment for students, transport and other relevant costs.

Gateway money is targeted and audited each year.
