Work Experience

All senior students at Mahurangi College have the opportunity to apply for up to three days work experience per year. To apply for work experience, a student needs to fill out a form available from the Careers Department.
Student Work Exploration (SWE) is officially recognised as a scheme allowing pupils at school to gain experience of the adult working world and employment opportunities. It is recognised by Government, Employers’ groups, Employees’ groups, Schools.
Advantages to participating school pupils are:
- to help prepare for their transition from school to work.
- to assist in gaining an appreciation and understanding of the employment environment.
- to aid in making vocational choices and decisions.
- to provide social experiences and motivational objectives of a different dimension from those available within the school.
Advantages to participating members of the employment sector should include:
- more realistically prepared students entering the workforce.
- an opportunity to support the local school educational programme.
- the chance to find out about a pupil in relation to a potential job opening in that business.
Work Experience Guidelines
Conditions of employment of students on this scheme must comply with the various regulations designed to safeguard the health and welfare of the workers. Of particular significance is the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and Regulations 54-59 of the Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995.
Safety Guidelines:
- The student must be supervised at all times.
- There must be one adult assigned to each student.
- They must be issued with the same protective gear as workers.
- They must have the Emergency Procedures explained to them.
- They must be told which are NO GO areas. These include anywhere where heavy machinery is in operation.
- They must not be asked to do any heavy lifting.
- They must not operate any machinery, including power tools.
General Guidelines
- No payment may be made by employers to students or to the school in respect of work done.
- No student may replace a permanent or temporary employee on his/her work.
- Written permission will be obtained by the college teacher responsible for the scheme.
- The employer will be advised of any health problems of the student which may affect the work.
