This information has been compiled to help you in your first years of leaving school. We wish you well and hope this helps you.
WHERE TO LIVE?
You can find accommodation by looking in these places:
- Newspapers – these can also usually be accessed online for the city you plan to live in
- Polytechnics or Universities (accommodation offices and noticeboards)
- Noticeboards in shopping centre and outside supermarkets
- The internet
- Real estate agents
- Trademe
- Churches
- Word of mouth
A good web site for looking for flats, flatmates or rooms in flats is:
Accommodation in smaller cities is a lot cheaper – for example, Invercargill is a lot cheaper than Auckland.
On the Youth Law web site there is a really good section on the different types of accommodation – what to expect and your rights:
Hostels
- If you are going to a university, apply for more than one hostel – you cannot guarantee that you will get the hostel of your first choice.
- Private hostels can be found listed in the yellow pages. There may be others which are not listed and which you can find through websites of education and church. Hostels may have both single and shared (cheaper) accommodation – prices usually include 3 meals and heating, water, electricity and gas. You should check on Internet availability and costs. Laundry is paid for separately. Self-catering hostels can also be available and are cheaper, but you will need to budget to buy your food.
Flatting hints – What to check for:
The flat - light, warmth, size, storage. if the sun is ever on the roof of the house, what is in the next room?
Flatmates – do they keep the same hours as you, their interests, music tastes and volume it is played at, how often they are at home, do they socialise together?
Cooking - will you cook separately, together, or roster cooking duties, how the food costs are met?
Bills - how basics are paid for, how bills are paid?
Cleaning – Is there a roster? If so, is it stuck to and what will they expect of you? (Do you know how to clean the toilet and bathroom?)
Ask people who are flatting what they would look for.
