Extra-Curricular Activities

Music and Drama

Music is considered to be of great importance and all students are encouraged to participate in musical activities. The school has several musical performance groups: Junior and Senior Stage Bands, orchestral groups and choirs that perform regularly at school and community functions. A number of these groups have performed with great distinction in regional and national competitions.

A large number of students are involved in instrumental tuition. All pupils are offered free tuition in the following instruments - clarinet, oboe, flute, saxophone, trumpet and violin. While the College makes instruments available to beginners, on a yearly basis, students with prior musical experience are encouraged to purchase their own instruments.

A variety concert is held annually to provide an opportunity for musicians and dramatists to perform. Our school is also involved in the annual Stagechallenge and Rockquest competitions.

There is an annual junior or senior production, which can involve up to 150 students. In the past the school has put on many popular shows such as - West Side Story, Oklahoma and Alladin.

Outdoor Education
The outdoor education programme at Mahurangi College is well developed and students learn the importance of group co-operation and self-reliance in the outdoors.

All Year 7 students are invited to participate in a two-day education camp at Peter Snell Youth Village. Students take part in activities such as sailing, canoeing, snorkelling and attempt to complete a challenge confidence course.

Year 8 students attend a one-day outdoor education experience in their homeroom class at the start of the year.

The Year 9 students attend an end-of-year camp at the Kaueranga Valley. The year group camp together to experience a number of outdoor activities and to develop social and cooperative skills.

Finally, in the senior school, Year 13 students start the year with a challenging bush craft camp which encourages leadership, self-esteem and working cooperatively.

Various other activities, camps and field trips are organised as an important part of the programme in different subject areas.

Sports

The school provides a wide variety of sports and encourages students to become actively involved in them. Annual inter-school exchanges are held with Hauraki Plains (Thames Valley) and Rodney College (Northland). Most sports participate in regular Saturday or evening competition with other schools in the North Harbour area. Sports offered include - netball, soccer, hockey, rugby, yachting, cricket, tennis, athletics, swimming, rugby league, rock climbing, mountain biking, basketball, skiing, equestrian, surf life-saving and tramping.

The school teams perform at the highest level with a large number of pupils receiving North Harbour and Auckland representative honours each year.  Many past pupils have gone on to be national representatives in their sport.

Te Whanau O Mahurangi
The Maori culture group is a credit to the efforts of the staff, parents and the large number of students, both Maori and pakeha, who have been involved in its development over recent years. It has grown into an outstanding performance group of over 70 students that enables the school community to experience the richness of the indigenous culture. The quality of the group's performance has led to many requests to have it perform at many community events. The College is proud to have Te Whanau O Mahurangi represent it on official school occasions.

General
The school also provides the opportunity to become involved in the Young Enterprise Scheme and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Students interest in public speaking are given opportunities to take part in debating and individual speech contests both within the school and in national competitions.

Chess players are catered for with organised lunchtime tournaments.
