Courses of Study
![](slides/slides/pathwayunderline3.jpg)
Mahurangi College's curriculum is based on the principles of the New Zealand Curriculum framework and describes the elements that are fundamental to teaching and learning.
These elements include 7 essential learning areas, 8 essential skills and 9 principles, all integrated with positive attitudes and value towards learning. The notion of a 'seamless' curriculum, whereby students have access to outside agencies such as polytechnics, industries and universities, is incorporated into the Mahurangi College model.
Year 7
During the year all students follow a common course of study which will vary little from the courses at intermediate or primary schools.
In order to provide stability at this level, a homeroom teacher is responsible for much of the classes general work in subjects such as English, social studies, mathematics and science. Where possible the students receive specialist teacher assistance in physical education, Maori, music and technology subjects such as food technology and materials technology (wood, metal and textiles) and Japanese/Spanish where possible.
All students in Year 7 receive a six-week tuition module on word processors in order to develop their keyboarding skills and provide an introduction to word processing.
Year 8
Students continue to be taught the majority of their core subjects in homeroom classes. In addition they are given introductory courses in a full range of subjects including art, music, materials technology (metal and wood-based), food and textiles technology, electronics and the languages, Maori, Japanese, and Spanish.
By the end of Year 8 students have received tuition in basic information technology as part of their normal curriculum studies.
Year 9
At this level the core subjects of English, social studies, science, mathematics and physical education are usually delivered by different teachers.
Students still are offered a range of courses for a term: art, music and drama, food and materials technology, and graphics and design. Students are able to take two 1/2 term units of Maori, Spanish or Japanese.
Year 10
All students continue a common core of five subjects - English, social studies, mathematics, science and physical education. In addition they select options from a wide range of subjects including new areas such as digital technology, introductory accounting and economics and life skills. Students can also continue the language study that they began in Year 9 for a half year.
Years 11 - 13
In the senior school students are guided into a broad and balanced learning programme. Detailed information on all Year 11, 12 and 13 courses is available in the Senior Courses booklet.
Multi-Level Study is an essential component of the College curriculum Senior students may, with approval from Heads of Faculties, combine courses from any senior level into their own individual programmes.
