Students Rights and Responsibilities
![](slides/slides/pathwayunderline3.jpg)
The acceptance of basic rights and responsibilities will help to reduce conflict and create an environment where all can achieve their potential.
Rights
- To be treated with courtesy and respect
- To learn without being interrupted
- To be safe at school
- To get access to the best available facilities and teaching services
Responsibilities
- To treat others as you would wish them to treat you - courteously, with respect and consideration
- To take advantage of the opportunities offered and learn to the best of your ability
- To ensure that you do not interfere with the safety of others
- To not hamper the ability of others to learn
Homework and Study
There is a close link between academic achievement and the amount of time put into homework and private study. Regular and purposeful study at home is essential if full advantage is to be gained from the work at school. Co-operation of parents in the supervising of this homework is sought. Education always works best when it is a partnership between the school and the home.
Students should have a record of work set in a homework notebook and parents are encouraged to check this. The purpose of the notebook is to organise the students and inform and focus them on academic achievement. It is designed to be easily carried and staff will monitor its use.
A general guide to time spent on homework per night is:
- Year 7 & 8 - Up to forty-five minutes
- Year 9 & 10 - One to two hours per night
- Year 11 to 13 - Two or more hours per night
Parents should help their son/daughter settle into a regular pattern of homework. There may be occasions when nothing is set, but regular revision can be continued on those nights.
Homework includes:
- reading
- preparation for new work
- completion of work started in class
- revision and practice exercises
- preparation of projects or assignments
- background research (e.g. current events)
- learning vocabulary or important facts
- revising for class tests or examinations
- rereading/revising of all classwork done that day
- catching up on all work missed during absences
Parents can assist by:
- taking an interest in homework
- checking in student's homework notebook once a week
- helping students to plan their time effectively
- providing a quiet room, a straight chair, a table and a good light
- asking to see the work completed that day
