Yr7&8 Boys and Girls Touch Teams both come second at North Harbour Comp
Mahurangi College sent two team to play in the annual Intermediate North Harbour Competition on Thursday 1st November. The Year 7&8 Girls team was Captained by Tonya Botherway and Mariana Winiana, both very good players and lead by example. Danika Mckenzie also filled in the role as their third attacking player. The team was well supported by Sophie Hart, Gemma Harris and Heather Nicolls. On the wing and always prepared to finish off any opportunity was Momi Nawaia, Eunete Kaitaake and Jamie-Lee Roberts. The Girls team went through unbeaten in their pool and had to meet Northcross Intermediate in the final. This was a hard fought game that was a real nail biting affair. But with only 9 players and a long day, fatigue started to show and unfortunately Northcross were the victors. Congratulations to the girls team and to Michael-Lydia Winiana for coaching them. Mahurangi College Year 7&8 Girls were placed second in the North Harbour Intermediate Touch Competition for 2012.
Like the girls team the Year 7&8 Boys team had a successful showing against far bigger and stronger teams. However, they were unable to match our boys team-work and game-plan. The boys won their pool and had to play Orewa in their Semi-final.
It was a game where our boys had to stand fast and take everything that Orewa threw at them. The Boys team absorbed it all and then the tide slowly turned and they were victorious winning 3-1. But the game and day had taken its toll and the final against Northcross was going to be a big ask. We already had an injury and Northcross were on there way. Bigger than Orewa, faster and more skilled and their game plan was very similar to ours. The boys played well, captained by Tama Hawken and Lewis Arthur. They lead the team well with awesome support by Lachie Williams and Kade Banks. Rhys Jones's game improved over the day and he played the whole final at wing performing very well. Cane Whitaker's game improved, scoring runaways in the semi-final to get Mahu into the final. Caelan Amiss, Harry Skirrow and Mitchell Sterling performed in supporting all the team play. Cade Hansen played well through the day but was injured in the semi-final. A great day for all and with them only just losing the final 3-5, it was a terrific effort for a terrific team. Well done.
