Sports Blues Award Criteria and Application Form 2016

BLUES AWARD    

This is a prestigious distinction that is presented to a student who has achieved outstanding success in sporting activities.  This years Blues awards is coming up on the 21st October 2015. Recipients will receive a badge as well as a certificate. We are now collecting information from students to see who is eligible for an Award. If you have achieved at any sport this year whether for school, club or Reps please fill out a form and hand into the sports office by 16th September 2015. If you have a competition during the September holidays please let us know so we can factor that into the equation. Also if you coached, managed or was a game official for any school teams please fill out the form also and return the sports office by 16th September 2015. All forms must be signed and confirmed by a qualified Coach or the regional sporting body. It also needs to be signed by a parent who must give us their email address so we can confirm we have received the information..

NOMINATIONS

Parents, Coaches or Teachers may make nominations each year.  Nominations should be verified and signed off by a qualified person or persons in the sport or sports nominated.  These nominations are to be handed into the Sports Director or Sports Coordinators by the nominated date (date to be advertised via website and daily notices).  All nominations will be discussed at a special meeting where the a committee consisting of the sports department, the HOD of PE, a Senior Manager and the TIC’s will consider and support nominations.  Where a consensus cannot be reached the Principal will make the final decision.

NOTES FOR NOMINATIONS:

  1. The Sports Director shall chair all meetings relevant to the Sports Blues Awards.  In the instance where this may not be possible the HOD PE/SPORT or the Sports Coordinator may chair the meetings.
  2. A Board member (where possible) may attend meetings.
  3. All applications to be received no later than 9am on the 25th September 2015

BLUES AWARD CRITERIA: In order to achieve a BLUES AWARD the following standards must be met.  A Student shall - 

  1. Represent Mahurangi College in the particular sport (wherever possible)
  2. Represent to at least provincial level, e.g North, Northland, North Harbour, Auckland.
  3. Be in the highest team possible Provincial Team specified for that age group or grade.
  4. Win a provincial title or be in a specified placing group, e.g placed in the top 3 (where necessary see individual codes for placing required).
  5. Show good sportsmanship, commitment to team, lead by example and perform outstandingly in their sport during that year.
  6. Be selected for a tournament team at a provincial, regional or national Championship.

NOTES FOR CRITERIA:

  • Check criteria for each individual sport where listed.
  • In some sports the opportunity to represent the province or win a provincial title may not be available so nominations will be taken on their individual merit and performance.
  • In some situations it may be necessary to look at the quality of performance, e.g. the standard or level of the competition or the number of teams competing in an event.
  • Representative players must participate in at least one recognised event.
  • A Tournament Team is a team of top athletes selected at a Provincial, Regional or National event.

CERTIFICATE OF MERIT AWARD

Shall be awarded to recognise the achievements of those who don’t quite meet the standards for a Blues Award, but have still achieved at a high standard e.g. a representative b team.

CERTIFICATE OF MERIT AWARD CRITERIA

A student shall - 

  1. Represent Mahurangi College in the particular sport (wherever possible)

ACHIEVERS AWARDS

Is awarded for those who have achieved at a National or International Level.  Recipients shall receive a medal to recognise their elite achievement

ACHIEVERS AWARD CRITERIA:

A student shall –

  1. Represent New Zealand in nominated sport as an individual, as part of a team or squad.
  2. Participate as a New Zealand Representative in a recognised National or International Event.
  3. Be selected for a National or International Tournament Team.
  4. Win a National Title.<

NOTES FOR ACHIEVERS AWARDS:

A student may be considered for an Achievers Award when they place in a specified placing group at a National Competition (to be decided by the committee after consultation with appropriate expertise in the sport).

A SERVICE TO SPORT AWARD

Shall be awarded a Blue or Merit Award for their service to sport for Coaching, Umpiring or Refereeing, Managing or other relevant positions for specified sport.  

CERTIFICATE OF SERVICES TO SPORT:

FOR BLUES AWARD a student shall – 

  1. Complete courses and or standards towards a qualification for any of the above positions.<
  2. Actively hold any of the above positions.
  3. Provide competent and consistent service for a full season (continuity and years of service may also be taken into account).

FOR A MERIT AWARD a student shall – 

  1. Actively hold any of the positions above.
  2. Provide competent and consistent service for a full season

GUIDELINES FOR BLUES AND MERIT AWARDS

All sports shall use the criteria stated above.  The following sport specific guidelines shall be used in conjunction with the criteria as stated above also..

Athletics and Cross Country Blues Award

  • Win a provincial title
  • Selection to North Island SS Championships as North Harbour rep.
  • Top group finisher as individual or team at National SS Athletics and Cross Country
  • Top 3 placing at Auckland Regional Championship.

Merit Award

  • Member of relay team to win a provincial title at athletics and cross country.
  • Place 2nd or 3rd at North Harbour¬†
  • Place 4th or 5th at Auckland Regional Championship

AFL Blues Award

  • Auckland Representative.

Basketball Blues Award

  • Winner of Top North Harbour Grade for Secondary Schools Age Group.
  • North Harbour A Team representative.

Cricket Blues Award

  • North Harbour, Northland Premier age group or Northern Districts representative A team.

Merit Award

  • North Harbour or Northland age group B team representative

Equestrian Blues Award

  • Rodney & Waitemata Districts Representative
  • Place in top 3 at NZSS Pony Club Championships
  • Win at a Major Regional or Provincial Championship (Northland, North Island, Auckland, Waitemata etc.)

Hockey Blues Award

  • Win top North Harbour Grade for Secondary Schools Age Group
  • North Harbour A team representative

 Merit Award

  • North harbour B team representative
  • 1st XI to finish in Auckland top 4

Gymnastics Blues Award

  • Qualify and compete at National level
  • Place top 3 in Auckland Regional competition
  • Win in Northland competition¬†

Netball Blues Award

  • Netball North A team Representative
  • Upper North Island Secondary Schools Top 8
  • Win North Harbour Collegiate Premier Grade, Collegiate Year 9 Division 1, Championship Grade

Merit Award

  • North Harbour A team representative.
  • North Harbour Maori Age Group (Zone is Top of North Island to Taupo/Gisborne area) A team representative.
  • North Harbour Collegiate Premiere, Year 9 Division 1, Championship Grade Runners Up.

Rugby Blue

  • North Harbour U20, U18, U16, U14 A team representative.
  • North Harbour Roller Mills representative team
  • North Harbour U85kg, U13/45kg A team representative
  • North Harbour Girls Secondary Schools A team representative
  • North Harbour Sevens A team representative¬†
  • North Harbour Maori Open, Colts A team representative
  • Winner of Top North Harbour Grade for Secondary Schools Age Group or Division¬†
  • Auckland Blues Development Squad

Tennis Blue

  • Win Northland or North Harbour title (singles and doubles)
  • Win selection for North Harbour Provincial Team

Note: North Harbour has a far higher standard of tennis than Northland.  Our players are eligible for both. So the competition needs to be taken into account when deciding.

Merit Award

  • Selection for Northland age group team.

Touch Blue

  • Placed in the TOP 6 at NZSS National Championship
  • Win at North Harbour and or Auckland Regional level
  • North Harbour A team Representative
  • NZ Age group or NZ Open Representative
  • NZSS representative team
  • NZ Maori Age Group or Open A team representative
  • Place top 2 at NZ or NZ Maori Age Group or Open National Championship

Note:  Touch teams need to place top 2 at North Harbour AND top 3 at Regional level to qualify for NZSS Nationals.

Merit Award

  • Placed 2nd at NH, Auckland or Regional levell

Sailing Blue Award

  • Top 6 at NZSS Teams Champs
  • Top 10 in National Fleet Racing for Individual Performance

Swimming Blue

  • Qualifying for and competing at the NZSS Championship
  • Competing at Division One at National Age Group Championship
  • Qualify and compete at NZ Junior Championship (12 and Under)
  • Top 3 in Age Band Overall at NZ Ocean Swim Series (must compete in all swims)
  • Win an Individual Finals event at Auckland Champion of Champions

Merit Award

  • Win a Relay Finals event at Auckland Champion of Champions (must have a minimum of 6 teams in a final)

EDMONDS CUP – SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR

All round attitude, commitment, sportsmanship, performance and contribution to sport at the highest level. Nominees need to have been involved with a wide range of sports both in and out of college, have achieved in their sports, have contributed to their sports both on and off the field or court and are a positive role model.  Students who have excelled and are eligible for an “Achievers Award” may also be considered.

FROST PLATE – SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

All round attitude, commitment, sportsmanship, performance and contribution to sport at the highest level. Nominees need to have been involved with a wide range of sports both in and out of college, have achieved in their sports, have contributed to their sports both on and off the field or court and are a positive role model.  Students who have excelled and are eligible for an “Achievers Award” may also be considered.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

All sports will be considered.  If you think your child or a student maybe eligible please contact the sports office or applications can be downloaded from the college website and emailed to the sports office.

Mahurangi College reserves the right to change or alter the criteria at anytime without notification.  However, where possible notification may be given through the college website and or college daily notices.  All changes and recipients are at the discretion of the committee.
