Stephanie Hazard, 22, of Matakana and ex-Mahurangi Student, is skipper of the first-ever NZ Women’s Olympic Match Racing Team. Stephanie is sailing alongside team mates Susannah Pyatt, 21, from the North Shore and Jenna Hansen, 25, from Whangarei.
'It’s always been a dream that one day I would get to compete there. ", says Stephanie,. "Olympic Gold is as good as it gets and it just feels amazing to think we have a shot at maybe standing on the winner’s podium while they play the NZ anthem. It’s all going to boil down to how well we prepared and who sails best on the day. Susannah, Jenna and I have sailed together for about 18 months. Our best performance as a team was when we came fifth in Palma, Spain, in the ICF World Cup – the circuit for all the top Olympic sailing countries in our class. Placing fifth gave us a great boost in confidence – it showed us that we could do it."

Stephanie Hazard, Jenna Hansen and Susannah Pyatt, Match Racing in the New Zealand designed Elliott 6m, lost both of their races in today's difficult conditions against Claire Leroy of France, and reigning world champion Silja Lehtinen of Finland. They will have a rest day tomorrow before facing their final round robin match against the second ranked team from Russia on Saturday to decide their eligibility to progress to the quarter finals. Stephanie's Team was placed 5th but with 1 race to go are now eighth. They need to be in the top 8 to move to the next stage
Day 4 Update- 5th equal
Stephanie Hazard, Jenna Hansen and Susannah Pyatt's match race win was hard fought for and well deserved in this new Olympic discipline. They incurred a penalty in the pre start and although they led from the first cross upwind, they had to find just the right way and time to clear their penalty, and they succeeded. They lost their first race to team USA earlier in the day so now this crew are placed fifth equal overall in the round robin, and just three races remain to determine which eight teams will progress to the quarter finals.
