Sports Blues 2011

image

The Sports Blues Awards were held in the school Auditorium on Thursday the 15th September.  The awards are held to celebrate the achievements of the elite athletes in the school.  This year we were proud to congratulate 75 Athletes on their achievements so far this year.  Some played in teams whilst others competed as individuals.  But whatever their case they have all worked hard to achieve what they have to date.

The 2011 Sportsman of the year is Kayne Middleton, who couldn’t attend because he was competing in Australia for the NZ U17 Mens Touch Team, and the Sportswoman of the year is Liana Holt.  These two athletes were chosen, not only for their sporting expertise but also for their commitment, attitude and their breadth of involvement in college sport.

Also celebrated is the Sports Achievers Award.  This is given to those athletes who reach NZ standard in their respective sports.  This year saw 14 NZ Achievers and Mahurangi College are proud to have such Elite sports man and woman in our school.

Sports Blues isn’t just about competing it’s also about involvement and this year we had 12 students who were recognised for their contribution to sport through coaching, refereeing or umpiring.  Many codes struggle to field enough coaches or game officials and to see the younger generation willing to take on these roles, and in many cases excel in them, is great for sport in the college.

Special Guest Speaker for the evening was Stephen Lett.  Stephen is himself an ex Mahurangi College student.  He once stood up in the very same shoes as these students for the same reasons.  In 2001 he was Head Sports Prefect, was awarded Blues Awards for Athletics and Cross Country and was the “ 2001 Sportsman Of The Year”.  He was one of only two NZ Achievers at the time having won the NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country.  He is currently NZ’s 10,000m Road and Track Champion.

Mahurangi College has helped develop and nurture some great athletes

and we look forward to seeing many more of our students in the future.
