Sports Academy 2012

image

The Mahurangi College Sports Academy has as it’s mission statement.

“To provide elite athletes with an environment where they can excel to their potential.”

The students participate in a wide range of activities that give insight to the requirements of being a successful athlete. We also participate in the AUT “shine” programme as well as using experts from Sport North Harbour and other outside agencies. The programme includes sessions with a newspaper reporter, sports psychologist and other guests. The aim is to present to athletes the things that normally would not be covered by a specialist sports coach.

I would also like to thank the continued support of the ‘Founders Trust’ which gives the athletes their first taste of some of the potential rewards for high achievement.

This year we again had students performing to excellent standards and achievements.

Mitchell Joynt continued winning the Kiwi three day series making him the New Zealand champion for his age group in Archery. He holds four New Zealand records with six National titles. He then went on the World Championships where he won. Mitchell is now the u16 World Champion Compound Bow Hunter.

Rhys Panui-Leth also had an outstanding year. He represented New Zealand in AFL, (Aussie Rules) in the u16, u20 and open mens grades, attending a world championship in Australia where the New Zealand team came third. He also made the Oceania team that played in the Australian Championship.

Michael McMillan continued his success in Snowboarding. He is in the open mens Development Team. He also recently won the North Island Secondary School slope style event, 2nd in the Boardercross, and helped our team get third overall. A first for this college.

Shayne Dawson who was 1st in North Harbour in the triple jump and Leon Norton represented North Harbour at the North Island Secondary schools Athletic meeting.

Our Sailing team with Angus Adamson, Tim Sneddon and lead by Alice Noyer had to cope with some tricky conditions and finished seventh at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Champs. Alice however was first in both the North Harbour and Northland Starling Match racing Championships and first in the open New Zealand Championship held in January 2012.

Our Touch teams continued to perform with outstanding success with five students gaining New Zealand honours. Brooke Moka was a New Zealand u15 Girls representative, While Kayne Middleton was captain of the New Zealand u17 team that finished runners up in the Australian championships only losing out to Australian secondary schools team. He is also in the New Zealand open mixed squad.

Kortne Pearson had outstanding success in wrestling this year, being 1st in Northland Secondary schools, 1st in New Zealand Secondary Schools, 1st in the New Zealnd Olympic Wrestling Nationals and selected in the Oceania team to complete in Samoa in 2012. She is currently training hard hoping to gain New Zealand Olympic selection.

In rugby Samu Endemann was selected for the North Harbour B team, whom he is leading player. He also was selected in a New Zealand u17 talent development team.

Courtney Winterbottom did well in two sports. Competing as part of the Warkworth District Pony Club she was placed third in North Island. She was also first overall and second in dressage in the Waitemata/Rodney Area teams one day event. She also represented North Harbour in Hockey in U18‘s where they won their National tournament and also represented North Harbour NHL team( open ladies interprovincial team).

Jessica Innes lead our college girls Football team to win the 1A North Harbour championship. Jessica is a New Zealand u17 squad member.

Lauren Mitchell continued with her Netball and is looking to gain further honours next year.
