Mahurangi College Sports Academy

Mission Statement
To provide elite athletes with an environment where they can excel to their potential.
Objectives
To provide students with the opportunity to work with other talented and successful young students.
To provide those personal management and leadership skills that will enable them to be successful in the future.
To enhance the performance of individuals within the programme by developing both physical and mental skills.
To increase students’ knowledge and skills in a range of sporting and health areas.
To provide students with long-term sport related life skills.
To develop students within the programme to be positive role models for other students within the school.
Criteria for Selection
A strong academic commitment towards achieving your potential.
A outstanding sporting commitment.
An excellent attitude towards college in all aspects of college life.
High recommendations from teachers, coaches (College, club, rep.)
A positive training ethic and commitment toward performance enhancement.
Make a commitment to be a “ role model” for future academies.
Criteria for maintaining a position within the Academy
100% commitment to attending all classes.
Adhering to the "behaviour expectations "of the school.
Play sport for the college team, (selected on merit / if available) including appropriate positive attitudes.
Participation and fulfilment of all team requirements.
Commitment to achieving your potential by taking a full and active part in the programme and school activities (eg, interhouse activites)
Maintain academic standards
Sports Academy Programme ( two year )
Fitness testing – initial - term -year
Goal setting. 
Training programme design – year / month / week.
Training diaries - very simple
Public speaking. Hints, ideas, feel good.
Weight training as part of physical training.
Nutrition – in training / tournament / recovery.
Sports psychology - self talk, imagery, etc 
Injury prevention. 
Sports business plans. 
Cross training activities.
Game / tournament / event preparation.
Sponsorship – How to get it, expectations, giving feedback. 
Leadership skills.
Training Programme Guidelines
In line with given sport specific training programme -individual.
Aimed at a generic – all round ability to create a better all round athlete.
Fun.
Regular programme plus variety (cross training).
Monitored.
