3 Mahurangi Students place in top 3 at Te Tai Tokerau Manu Kōrero Speech Competition
Winners of this prestigious speech competition go on to be the movers and shakers in New Zealand society; the list of previous prize winners reads like a ‘who’s who’ of Kiwi Achievement.

So we are very proud that our kura this year, was strongly represented in three different speaking categories and that all our kaiwhaikorero acquitted themselves most admirably.

Our involvement in this competition started three years ago with a brave attempt by one speaker performing in the nerve-wracking televised competition.  Last year we boasted a regional and national winner and a strong personal best for our second speaker.

This year, not only did we have three fantastic speakers but all three placed second or third in their categories.  No other school in Te Tai Tokerau was so well represented across the board to such a high standard.  Ka pai to mahi kotiro ma!

For the first time this year, prior to the competition,we ran our own in-house Manu Kōrero in order to select the speakers that would represent our college at regional level.  We were honoured with a great panel of experienced judges and the concluding speech by Stacey Morrison was both stirring and encouraging for all of the students present.

The regional competition took place in Okaihau in the Far North District where we were warmly welcomed and accommodated at the Marae close to the college.  Our Kapa Haka students were an integral part of the competition, their waiata tautoko, polished  appearance and exemplary behaviour all drawing admiring comments from kaumatua, kuia and teachers from other schools.

Our school volunteer organisers, Kylee Osborne, Vicki Demant, Claire Winiana and Head of Māori, Michael Winiana should be congratulated for the immense work that went in to the whole Manu Kōrero experience for our students, the positive effects of which will last lifetimes for sure.

The final placings were as follows:

First time speaker Ariāna Osborne (Junior English) - third.
Michael-Lydia Winiana (Senior English) - second.
Ruahei Demant (Senior Māori) - second.

Congratulations to all our students.  We look forward to increasingly high standards and increasing involvement next year.  Will you take up the wero?  The challenge is laid...!
