“Aladdin” Musical Production was MAGIC!”

Your browser doesn't support JavaScript or you have disabled JavaScript.

What a whirlwind of a magical carpet ride ... for all involved in this dynamic, dazzling and delightful  journey called “Aladdin” which was this year’s Senior Musical Production!

Congratulations to all 70 Senior students in the Cast plus an additional 80 students, teachers and parents involved with the Production Team. Special acknowledgement goes to Wendy Sutherland for her brilliant orchestration & dedication as Producer, Director plus Costume Designer/ Maker of this bi-annual cultural event. Her Support Team of - Jane Newby; Jenni Segedin, Jenny Eirena, Sarah Crocombe and Laughton Kora to name just a few -- also did a fantastic job keeping everything flowing behind the scenes.

Enthusiasm was bubbling over from the stage into the appreciative audience throughout each 1 ¬Ω hour show. Almost all seven performances (three School matinees & four Evening Performances) sold out approximately 2,000 total seats over the fortnight.

Two of the most outstanding accomplishments during “Aladdin” was firstly, the entire show – from auditions to the finale’ – was completed on a minimal budget and within just eight weeks during Term 2.  Plus, the multi-talented Mrs. S spent well over 400- hours making & preparing approximately 150 of the costumes ... in addition to her duties as Head of Mahu’s Music Department!  (One has to wonder if she ever slept?)

Impressive moments from the Main Cast include:

Nicholas Lee, held his lead role with conviction as “Aladdin” as he was in almost all 14 scene with endless lines and a large variety of songs.

Jessie Wriggleworth’s character as the beautiful “Jasmine” delighted us with her strong and passionate voice.

Kutumi Lefferts enjoyed a commanding stage presence, both in size and personification of “Genie”, while offering extensive comic relief throughout the show.

Alana Hathaway was very convincing as the wicked villain “Jafar” with her fantastic costume and towering presence plus great singing voice.

Her quick-wit and humorous side-kick “Iago the Parrot” was deliciously played by Lana McCarthy.

Atanrerei Rui also did an excellent job as “Sultan” with his royal presence and gentle persona.

Cade Hansen as “Abu the Monkey” brought his whimsical character to life with his pantomime gestures and talented dancing.

Plus, we were treated with the sultry voice of Becky Moon as “Narrator” as she set the stage in the opening act.

Additional praise goes to additional  Main Cast members including the talents of Olivia Collier; Emmi Baur, Sam Stevenson, Phillip Perkins, Xavier Garneaux-Roughan; Daniel Collings, Eden Adam, Ashleigh Dick and Sophie Green.

Another 55 student participants consisted of: the sultry & vibrant Dance Troupe; the handsome, bumbling Palace Guards; the attractive yet giggly Harmony Group; and the colourful costumed Chorus Girls all did an excellent job bringing the stage to life!

Specials credit also goes to Scott Dirven & Becky Moon for their Stage Design & Technical Team for the stunning lighting and new 3-D screen projection techniques.  Elspeth Free, Amy Maddren & Abigail Sim also went above and beyond the call of duty as Dance Choreographers!

The Make-up & Hair group did an outstanding job with their artistic & detailed face painting under the supervision of Jamie Bray. Plus, the audience was treated to live music from the Show Band consisting of teachers & students under the direction of Lyn Dashper.

Many memorable melodies such as “A Whole New World” & “Prince Ali” with the impactful Parade entrance will continue to resonate through our minds for weeks to come.

In closing, we also need to extend our special thanks to our Community Sponsors including: Home Plus; Signs by Two Brothers; Lee & Hart Unichem; Franklin’s Pharmacy; Charlie’s Gelato; Robyn @ Inspired Hair; and Bryn Sutherland for their generous support & contributions.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to everyone involved in the Aladdin Cast & Crew.  Each person contributed their individual part to make the collective a beautiful tapestry which touched the lives of many!  “Shalom & Good Fortunes to one and all “... until the next Senior Musical Production in 2015!

“It is always great to see some of the students extending themselves & coming out of the woodwork to expand their interests & talents,“ exclaimed Jane Newby, Mahu’s Art Coordiator & the Producer’s Assistant.
