As the boats sailed further away from the beach, the choppy seas meant there was plenty of bailing even before the 5 minute gun. It was a challenging course with some large wind-shifts off the headlands at the top mark and steady 18 to 20 knots with gusts up to 25 knots.</p>
<p>On Course Two, the 420’s, Open Bic, P Class and Starlings sailed in even rougher seas with a steady 20-22 knots that caused many capsizes on all legs of the course. It proved to be a very challenging day for all, particularly the younger skippers and crews. </p>
<p>Brayden Hamilton from Belmont Intermediate was crowned North Harbour Year 7&8 Optimist champion.</p>
