At the end of each year, Mahurangi College sends the Year 9 students on an incredible outdoor education camp. 187 students plus a selection of the next years prefects, parents and teachers set up camp at the Dickies Flat Adventure Camp, close to the Karangahake Gorge. An advance party set up some of the tents and some essential equipment on the Sunday before the students arrived the following day. A tent village appeared soon after their arrival and quickly a full programme of activities was underway. 

 

A ropes course developed confidence and team work, raft building challenged strategy and problem solving skills as they crossed the chilly river. Exploring tunnels and abseiling down the remains of the gold mining industry helped make links to the past. Small groups made their way up to the Waitewheta Hut as part of a ten hour hike where they spent a night fending for themselves. As if that was not enough, students spent another night out under nothing more than a plastic sheet and a sleeping bag.

 

Each student returned with interesting stories and new friendships. For many it was the first time they had embarked on such an adventure with unique challenges to the New Zealand bush in the beautiful part of the country. The success of the camp can be largely attributed to a team of staff including Ms Merrick, Mr Callachan, Mr Sterling and Mr Frost who played key roles. 

 

An army this size marches on its stomach. The trip could not have happened without the support of the many parents who made changes to their programmes to provide their expertise and experience to ensure the students had a safe and enjoyable time. Well done to the students who conquered challenges and overcame obstacles, both literal and metaphorical.
