Yr 13 conquer Barrier Island for another year
109 weary students, parents & staff disembarked from the Kawau Kat, at 11:30pm Thursday 5th February, onto the Sandspit Wharf; survivors of yet another successful expedition to Great Barrier Island. The year 13's start the year with this camp, with the aim of developing their self management, leadership and teamwork skills. All of these admirable attributes were sorely tested, but further enhanced by the experience. This included several days of tough back country hiking, breaking and setting up camp each day, and a day devoted to peer support training.
Physically and mentally it's challenging stuff, that would break the will of lesser beings. Our students universally brush it off and ask for more. (Perhaps I exaggerate, most confess all they want is a hot shower and familiar bed). Anyway a great time was had by all, judging by the excited greetings given to family who came to collect them.
The school would like to make a couple of special thank you's. Firstly to the 14 parents who attended and supported the 8 staff leading the students. It wouldn't be possible without their contribution. Also a big thanks to the Westpac Trust helicopter crew for uplifting an immobilised student from near the summit of Mt Hobson. After a quick medical check she was able to rejoin the group. Year 12's I look forward to your involvement in 2016.
