The 2016 Netball season got off to an excellent start, with an increase in numbers, meaning we had 13 teams competing in the North Harbour competition. We began the year, with our first ever “Mahurangi College Netball Family Fun Day”, on Sunday 8th May, which proved a huge success. This involved a fundraiser, as well as a chance to build positive relationships within the netball community.

Year 7/8

With a huge influx of eager young Year 7s, we were able to have six teams in total playing Thursday night netball at North Harbour. Unfortunately Thursday night came to often mean torrential rain, but our girls were keen, as were the supporters and they battled throughout the season, even coming away with some outstanding wins. It was incredible to see how much the players improved throughout the season and this was largely due to the amazing coaches who worked hard to develop their skills.

We had three teams place in their grades:

-7/1, Runner up Year 7 Grade 1 Flight, 7/2, Runner up Year 7 Grade 5 Championship, 7/4, Winner of Year 7 Grade 6 Championship

Year 9

Tuesday evenings saw three Year 9 teams compete in down at the North Harbour courts and we had some great success. All three teams placed in their grades with 9/1, winning the 9/1 Flight Grade, 9/2, winning the 9/3 Championship Grade and 9/3, placing runner up of 9/5 Flight Grade. Well done to all these players and we look forward to you joining our senior teams on Saturdays next year.

Senior

With four senior teams competing on Saturday morning at North Harbour, it meant many players, parents and coaches had to be up at the crack of dawn, with games starting at 8am, and running through till 12pm. Apart from a few horrendously wet Saturdays, we generally had a fine season and all teams played some outstanding netball. Come the final Saturday of the year, all teams had bonded extremely well and their skill level had developed substantially. Congratulations to Senior 2, who were the Winners of College 4 Championship.

The season would not have been as successful without the support of all our coaches, managers, parents, and also our umpires, who did an outstanding job throughout the season. It is always difficult finding volunteers to fill these positions, and the Netball Committee are most grateful for all the time and effort you have contributed this season.

Senior 1 Netball

This year the Senior 1 team graded in the Open A division at North Harbour, and with this brought tough competition and nail-biting games. The girls performance improved significantly over the season and the team atmosphere every Saturday morning was always vibrant and competitive. Throughout the season we became more than just a bunch of girls who play netball, as Mrs Drost refers to it, we were a ’sisterhood’. From the early morning trainings to the fitness testing, to those particularly rainy games, we always had each other’s back. This team atmosphere only became stronger when we headed to the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Tournament and this was largely helped by the team singing in the van. We came across some very strong teams over the week and fought until the very last game in order to be safe in B grade. UNISS is a mentally and physically draining experience, however the girls will also say it is one of the highlights of their school netball.

One of the highlights of our season was a win against our exchange rivals; Hauraki Plains. In the annual exchange our two teams were even for most of the game, but in the end Hauraki took the win 48-46. However, we played the same team at UNISS and there was unfinished business. In our competitive spirit we took to the courts and won 42-16. I would like to thanks our Coach, Mrs Drost for the constant support and guidance throughout the season and Miss Ruland, our lil organiser, for all her hard work leading up to UNISS and managing the team on Saturday. A big thank you also to the parents and caregivers for being our supporters during the season through rain or shine. And finally to the girls, for having the belief, mental toughness and intensity through the season to play some outstanding games of netball.
