Northern Region Surf Lifesaving Championships

Over the weekend of 20-21st February, 12 Mahurangi Students competed in the Northern Region Surf Lifesaving Champs held this year at Omaha Beach. This is a massive surf carnival as the Northern Region area starts in the far north of NZ and takes in all of Northland & Greater Auckland and extends as far south as Raglan.

Around 450 top surf athletes came to Omaha to compete in individual, team and rescue events including some members of SLSNZ representative teams and NZ youth reresentative team.

The students competing were Jamie Peterson, (who represents Piha Surf Lifesaving Club),¬†

Paul Hardy, Chantelle Maher, Rhiannon Gill, Laura Puckett, Ashley Maher, Sam Peterson, Tyler Ferguson-Yearbury, Austin Puckett, Jerome Cunningham, Kate Powell and Emma Foote, (all representing Omaha Beach Surf Club).

For Emma and Kate this was their first big surf carnival as they had only just qualified as Lifeguards in January.

Against quality opposition, all performed outstandingly. Results as follows;

Jamie ¬†

1st¬†- U19 Run swim run

3rd¬†- U19 board race.

1st¬†- Open Taplin (6 person team, 2 swimmers, 2 board, 2 surf ski).

2nd¬†- U19 board relay (3 person team).

3rd¬†- Double surf ski (2 person team).

Chantelle

2nd¬†- U19 2km beach run

We also had a number of 4th Places.

4th¬†- Sam & Paul - U19 Mens Taplin relay.

4th¬†- Chantelle Ashley & Rhiannon - U19 womans beach relay.¬†

4th¬†- Austin, Jerome Tyler & Sam - U16 Mens Beach relay

Overall it was a great carnival to be involved with and watching NZ top surf athletes compete at our home beach was really amazing.
