Mahurangi Mixed Touch win Bronze at Nationals

The Senior Mixed team headed off to the NZ Secondary School Touch Nationals on Thursday 11th December at Bruce Pullman Park in Papakura.  Their goal to have fun and enjoy playing with their mates. The team got off to a great start with 3 wins on the Friday against Tokoroa, Mt Albert Grammar and Queen Charlotte.  Saturday saw a win against Massey but close losses against Te Awamutu and Macleans.  Waiting with bated breath the team were ecstatic to hear that Massey drew and Macleans won against Te Awamutu putting Mahu into the top 4.  Sundays semi final saw the team come up against Mt Albert Grammar again.

After losing to us once MAGs were determined not to have a repeat performance and won 5 - 3.  Although the team lost the semi final, moral was high and determination was strong going into the playoff for 3rd & 4th against Macleans.  The teams were evenly matched scoring trie for trie. The final minutes were nail biting whilst the team fought to keep their composure and focus counting down to the final hooter.  Capitalising on Macleans mistakes in the last seconds saw Mahu score.  Players and parents alike were celebrating even as the final hooter went to end the game. After 2 years of hard work Mahurangi Mixed finished with a Bronze at the 2014 NZ Secondary Schools Touch Nationals.  This is the best result ever for Touch.  3rd in NZ isn’t too bad. 

Congratulations to the team for an awesome effort.  Congratulations also to Kris Middleton, Tamara Hagger and William Haughey who were selected for the NZ Secondary Schools Mixed Touch Tournament team.  Thank you to Karl Middleton and Catherine Campbell for their leadership and coaching.  Thank you to everyone who helped the team in some way.
