A very good round of grading saw Mahurangi’s First XI Football Boys easily dispatch sides from Pinehurst and Long Bay. These results saw the boys placed in the B Grade Championship, a grade higher than last year. Playing in the Championship took a little adjustment for our boys as we were pitted against schools - such as Auckland Grammar, Sacred Heart and Mt Albert Grammar - with a big footballing pedigree. It also meant our squad consisting of students from Yr 10-13 were generally playing against older, more experienced teams.

Being a younger squad our boys tended to give away about 4 inches in height to every player on the opposing team, each week, making it difficult to defend corners. Despite a slow start which saw us lose our first 5 games the boys never gave up and continued to improve each week. A strong finish to the season saw us win 3 of our last 4 games. We finished the 10 team competition in 8th place. With a young squad, we only had two Year 13s in the team, big things are expected next year and hopefully we can start next season where we left off this year, in winning form.
