The ‘Mahutrons’ (Laura Puckett, Rhonda Davies, Austin Puckett, Regan Swensson) and the ‘Killer Bees’ (Bree Wooller, Rebekah Wilson, Elizabeth Errington, Heather Pearson) competed in the Secondary Schools Sustainability Challenge at Shakespear Regional Park in early April.

They were amongst twenty other teams from eight other Auckland schools. This event was run by Lactic Turkey Events together with the Auckland Council as part of the 2014 SCHOOLS SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE SERIES.

Teams of 4 students compete in a 3 hour event, which includes a mix of running/walking, navigation and sustainability based activities.  Teams will navigate to as many checkpoints as they can, collecting points for each checkpoint visited.  To earn extra points teams can complete sustainability themed activities which will require some research and teamwork.  Examples of activities could be to identify native bird calls, match a pest to the correct trap used or make something from flax.

Our teams competed enthusiastically with ‘Mahutrons' finishing 5th= and ‘Killers Bees’ in 9th place. They showed great teamwork and stamina to cover the big distances around Shakespear to reach many of the far-flung checkpoints. It was an enjoyable and fun day, experiencing a novel event in great surroundings.
