Whaia te iti kahurangi evening an opportunity for the Maori community to show the academic, sporting and cultural achievements of those Maori students at Mahurangi College.

The evening was MCed by Harrison Pene-Bavastro and Mariana Winiana, both Year 12 students. Harrison set the scene with a rousing tauparapara. Then Mr Macleod welcomed everyone to the evening. Miss Renee Johnston was the guest speaker, she enlightened everyone with her sporting achievements (such as captaining the NZ U18 Junior Tall Ferns) and then expressed that student who work hard can still have time to do a number of sports and still succeed academically. A balance in life is important. The evening was population with a large group of students and supporting whanau members. The foyer normally a good size was now to small as they all squeezed in.

Through the evening we were entertained with a waiata from Halle Gravatt (Yr8) on keyboard and Cleo Penman (Yr 10) on vocals, then another heart warming waiata by Dani Perkinson (Yr12) playing guitar and singing and then a light heart well present but very informative speech from Gabriel Tahitahi on ‘growing up as a Maori’.

We had a large number of Maori students who were recognised for all their sporting achievements. But the evening was all about academics and recognising our tauira. For the Teina Top Year 7/8 Maori student, that went to Halle Gravatt, Waenganui Top Year 9,10/11 student this went to Davina Jones and our Tuakan Year 12/13 went to Hannah Powell.
