Wednesday 24^th of September saw the first Pasifika Awards evening take place at Mahurangi College. The evening was initiated and planned by year 13 student Atanrerei Rui who also MC’d the event. The awards ceremony celebrated success at school, by Pasifika students, through the presentation of Merit Certificates on the recommendation of teachers.

Mr Macleod opened the evening welcoming 120 parents and students in the schools auditorium and congratulated the students on their achievements and their contribution to school life at Mahurangi. Mr O’Brien then reported on the development of the Mahurangi College Pasifika Action Plan and thanked the parents for their feedback and input into that plan. He then invited parents to join a Pasifika Parents Committee being set up to help the school respond to Pasifika students needs.

The Pasifika group performed three items that were applauded enthusiastically and enjoyed by all.

The awards were then presented by Mrs Carol Weaver and Mr Macleod culminating in the final three awards to children who displayed attitudes and achievement that represented “The Epitomy of Pasifika.”

The Epitomy of Pasifika Awards were won by:

Year 7 and 8: Aborina  Arawautu

Year 9 and 10: Veronica Nabuti

Year 11 – 13: Kappy Makasini

The evening was a wonderful celebration of children’s achievement and community involvement in our school. It would not have taken place without the tireless work of our Pasifika Co-ordinator Mrs Carol Weaver and the support of the Pasifika Focus Group and of course the vision of Atanrerei.
