    L3HIS L3 History 19 credits Yr: 13
10 credits externally assessed and 10 credits internally assessed. This is a university approved subject.
    Costs:
Approximately $110 for Bay of Islands field trip. TBC 2024
    Prerequisites:
9 credits from Level 2 History (5 internal and 4 external) or 12 credits from English (external course) or Head of Faculty approval.
    Learning Strategies:
It is not necessary for students to have done History at Level 1 and 2 but a sound grasp of comprehension skills and reading skills are strongly recommended. There is a strong focus on analysing evidence to understand perspectives, causation and significance. Evaluative judgements will also be developed and made.
    Main Areas of Study:
The theme for Year 13 History is 'Power and Identity'. There will be a study of the Northern War in term 1 which may be supported by a field trip to the Bay of Islands to experience the site where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and the significance of the area as a whole. The Battle of Kororareka 1845 will be our main area of focus as we analyse the causes and the impact on our society today. An analysis of a contested event in history will enable students to understand perspectives and why history is a discourse as historians are continuing to debate these events. They will develop their ability to write as historians.
