This course explores the brutal and powerful legacy of U.S. slavery, using film, poetry, and visual storytelling to uncover voices that were once silenced.

At the heart of the course is the award-winning film 12 Years a Slave – a raw and unforgettable depiction of one man's fight for freedom. This becomes the backdrop for your year as you explore texts created during or inspired by this era, from personal narratives to modern spoken word and protest poetry.

You'll analyse how writers and filmmakers use visual language, performance, and voice to challenge oppression, evoke empathy, and tell stories that matter. Expect to think deeply, question what you've learned about history, and find connections between the past and present.

This course is perfect for students who want to engage with powerful texts, build critical thinking skills, and respond creatively to ideas that still echo in today's world.
