    Main Areas of Study:
Whether you’re aiming for university, an apprenticeship, or a creative career, Level 1 Textiles is a hands-on, purposeful course designed to build real-world skills and make a difference in the community.
In Term 1, students design and construct a custom bag or sports holdall for a stakeholder of their choice. This project introduces a wide range of practical sewing and construction techniques and is worth 6 NCEA credits. Students take pride in producing a professional, functional item tailored to real needs.
In Term 2 and 3, the focus shifts to a meaningful community project. In collaboration with The Awhi Shed, a local initiative that provides clothing for the homeless and vulnerable, students design and make garments such as hoodies, sweatpants, and children's pyjamas. This project helps develop both technical and creative design skills, while fostering empathy, purpose, and community engagement.
Throughout the course, students will explore textile design, sustainability, fabric technologies, and the design process. No prior sewing experience is required—just creativity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
Level 1 Textiles is a university-approved subject and provides a strong foundation for further study in design, fashion, engineering textiles, and technology.
