L1MAT L1 Mathematics 10-15 credits Yr: 11
L1MAX and L1MAT courses each include two internally assessed standards and one externally assessed standard, providing a total of 15 credits. L1MAP consists of two internally assessed standards, totalling 10 credits. In addition to this students will work towards 10 numeracy credits.
Costs:
Approximately $40 for work books. A scientific calculator is essential for all students. For students who will go on to take mathematics in year 12 and year 13, a Casio fx 9750 GIII (or similar) graphics calculator is recommended. Graphics calculators can be hired from school for a cost of $30 for the year. Students wishing to hire a graphics calculator must fill out the form available at student services.
Prerequisites:
All year 11 students are required to take mathematics and must select this subject.
There are 3 courses available for level 1 mathematics. Students will be placed in the course that best meets their academic needs through consultation with their year 10 class teacher and the head of faculty. The course they are placed in for year 11 can impact on the choices of math class available to students for year 12 and year 13. A copy of our presentation to students explaining this pathway will be made available on the student's Google classroom.
Learning Strategies:
Students will learn through a variety of different learning strategies that include: directed teaching, investigations and discovery learning, group work, practice tasks, regular formative and summative assessment.
Main Areas of Study:
The core areas of study at Level 1 are Number and Algebra, Geometry and Space, and Probability and Statistics.
• L1MAX (Extension)
This course is specifically designed for students intending to pursue mathematics at higher levels in Years 12 and 13. In addition to covering carefully selected Level 1 standards, the course will begin to introduce key algebraic concepts required for success in Level 2 mathematics.
• L1MAT (Mainstream)
This course provides a comprehensive programme covering a wide range of Level 1 topics. It leads only to a Level 2 and Level 3 mathematics pathway focused on statistics. Please note that this course does not provide a pathway to Level 3 Calculus.
• L1MAP (Numeracy)
This course is designed to support students in meeting the NCEA numeracy requirements and may include two internally assessed standards. The main focus is on helping students understand and apply mathematics in real-world contexts.
