All year 11 students are required to take English. There are two streams for English, the external course and a literacy course. Students who have passed the literacy reading and writing co-requisite in Year 10 will be placed into the external course, unless prior approval is given by the Head of Faculty. | ||||

Main Areas of Study: | ||||
In this course, you will become a sharper, more confident writer and reader. You will learn to craft bold, convincing arguments using language, structure, and style for effect. You’ll also explore how language shapes identity, incorporating mātauranga Māori and recognising the role of language in expressing who we are. You will study a powerful written text (either Macbeth or Fahrenheit 451) unpacking its big ideas and connections to our world today. You will learn how authors use language to influence and engage readers, as well as develop strong essay writing skills. Later, you will tackle unfamiliar texts, analysing how meaning is created in poetry, prose, and non-fiction - all while preparing for the external NCEA exams. In this course you will grow as writers, think critically, and explore how language connects us to culture and identity. |
