    L1EFS L1 Education for Sustainability 10 credits Yr: 11
    Students will complete two standards, one being internally assessed and one externally assessed.
    Costs:
    Project supplies $20 Field trips $20 Costs could change based on project
    Prerequisites:
    Students will have taken 'Education for Sustainability' as a Tech class in Year 10 or indicate an interest in sustainability and working on action projects. Students must have the skills to work co-operatively and independently. Students need to be able to listen respectively to the opinions of others and to clearly communicate their opinions both verbally and in written form. Students must have demonstrated they are responsible with minimum supervision in and out of the classroom.
    Learning Strategies:
    Students will develop skills to create, organise and implement sustainability related projects. Work will take place in cooperative groups and require students to work effectively with others. Communication skills will be a focus, including being able to articulate and defend their opinions based on facts and details. Students will develop skills to create, organise and implement sustainability related projects. Work will take place in cooperative groups and require students to work effectively with others with on an independent basis. Their work will take place in and out of the classroom including direct hands-on work.
    Main Areas of Study:
    L1 EfS 2024 will be focussed around the four pillars of Sustainability and about how to take action on a sustainability related issue.
    The Four Pillars of Sustainability
    · By the end of the course students will be able to describe the four pillars of sustainability which are Social, Cultural, Environmental and Economic.
    · They will be able to discuss and evaluate the interconnectedness of the four pillars.
    · They will be fluent with the Māori values of kaitiakitanga, kotahitanga, manaakitanga and will be able to tie them into the four pillars.
    · Students will also do an inquiry on the sustainability of local businesses, including primary and secondary industries (for example a local vineyard, Southern Paprika, Matakana Botanicals, Mitre 10, Warehouse…)
    Taking Action
    · Students will learn how to plan and take an action that will improve the sustainability of a chosen area.
    · Students will evaluate other actions first in order to see what is involved in taking action and they will reflect on the effectiveness of the action.
